Permafrost is a thick layer of soil that lies beneath the ground in the Arctic Tundra. Because of permafrost, there are no trees and other vegetation have very shallow root systems.

The Arctic Tundra biome is found found solely in the northern hemisphere. It encircles the North Pole, and extends south until it reaches the coniferous forests of the Taiga biome. Countries featuring the Arctic Tundra biome include Russia, Greenland, Finland, and Canada, and on the continents of Asia, north America, and parts of Europe.
